“Life unfolds differently for all of us, and that’s the beauty of it.”
“So, what’s next for you?”
This is one big question that makes even a confident person go blank and question oneself. Specifically in tech where everyone seems to be having a road map, many certifications done or lined up and a very clear learning plan, we tend to sometimes feel like an odd one out if we do not have such plans or all figured out.
But here is my honest truth that most people don’t say it out loud but they really don’t have it all figured out. Nobody is that perfect who is all clear of what they want exactly. Not even the person who speaks fluently in acronyms like LWC, API and DevOps. Not even the consultant who takes 5 calls a day with the clients. And not even the founder who is juggling delivery, hiring or the vision of the new company which is just founded by him/her. Every person is figuring things out as they go. A few just look a little more composed while doing it.
People are made to grow up in a certain way believing that successful people have crystal clear direction like they wake up knowing exactly where they are headed. But in the Salesforce environment, clarity is something one builds while walking the path and not at all before starting it.
When I first joined the Salesforce ecosystem, I thought I needed to know everything, every object, every function etc. I would open LinkedIn and see people doing this or that certification, badges, speaking about salesforce while I knew nothing at all. Not even the terms that have always been a part of Salesforce since the inception. Hence, I started feeling a quiet knot from inside.
The voice in my head would whisper that I am behind, I am not growing fast enough and that I am supposed to have it all figured out like right now. At one point, I got demotivated too and started thinking that I am not going to fit in this Salesforce ecosystem. But the more I worked in this system, I realised one thing that everyone is hustling. No one has clarity. They are also moving ahead with smaller goals that eventually will turn into bigger ones. The more I worked, stumbled and learned, the more I realized that clarity always comes from the action you keep on doing every single day.
In a new company, there can be days that can make you feel on top of the world where everything clicks, clients are all happy and the system works beautifully. Then there are days when a small workflow breaks and sends the entire team spiralling into late night debugging and collective coffee overdoses. So every day is different. And that’s okay. That’s real.
People who actually grow are not the ones who know everything, they are the ones who stay curious, kind to themselves and always keep going even when they are not sure of the path they are walking on.
Uncertainty is a power that is often overlooked. When we admit that we don’t know everything, then:
Curiosity flourishes: Rather than pretending, we ask, explore and experiment. Some of the solutions are always from admitting that we don’t know everything and lets explore.
Empathy deepens: When we recognise our struggles, we naturally come to understand others' challenges too. When this empathy rises, it builds stronger teams, better client relationships and more supportive work culture.
Resilience grows: Facing the unknown regularly teaches patience, adaptability and persistence. Each small step forward, even amidst confusion, builds strength.
Learning accelerates: Comfort zones are the enemy of growth. Not knowing forces us to confront new ideas, tools, and strategies we might otherwise avoid.
Whether you are new to Salesforce or have been working in the ecosystem for years, changing roles or managing the clients or trying to balance personal life and professional ambition, you just do not have to know everything and neither do you need to have it all together.
You are always allowed to be in progress. You are allowed to take time. You are allowed to evolve.
No career or a person or even a system is linear. Everything is done on the basis of a mix of trails, reflections and growth. In my honest and humble opinion, if everything is figured out already, life would be painfully predictable. Isn’t it kind of boring?
Well, I can’t say about other people but I anticipate that it is almost the same for everyone how “figuring it out” looks like. It might look like admitting when you’re stuck and asking for help rather than pretending. It might look like taking pride in small wins or allowing yourself to rest with no guilt at all.
To redefine success as progress and not just perfection because honestly no one and nothing is perfect. Everything takes effort. Yes, one has to be honest in making an effort. I believe everything else will follow.
It’s messy, it is certainly uncertain but it is real. And clearly that is the whole point. Stop waiting until everything is all figured out and start contributing meaningfully.
Not having all the answers does not make anyone less capable. In fact, it makes life and work come alive. Uncertainty keeps everyone curious. It keeps you humble, engaged and compassionate. The path is never a straight line. I will always be messy, unpredictable and sometimes uncomfortable. But these kinds of situations create real learning, real breakthroughs and real satisfaction.
So, whenever you think that you have no idea what you are doing, then take a deep breath and remember it is okay to not have it all figured out. Just trust yourself and work hard and move ahead, everything else will follow.
“One day, you’ll look back and realize, you were never behind”.
