Celebrating Festivals at Work — Without Going Overboard

As a team which is in growth stage, our culture is created in a way that not just delivers great work but also builds human connections and shared moments on the way ahead. At MIDCAI, we love a small and good celebration. So, last week we celebrated Independence Day and Janmashtami at our office and hence, I thought of writing something about the same. As a part of the people and administration team, I always think about these things a lot. Here’s a glimpse of how we celebrated these occasions which opened a blog topic for me as to how it can be done meaningfully and in the simplest way possible.

Why Celebrate at all?

Festivals are always more than just having fun. They offer us a chance to connect and pause for a bit. It involves moments like recognition and inclusion. It gives us opportunities to indulge in different stories, food and traditions and hence, bring diverse teams together.

Our Approach: Festive, Not Forced

Keep it Simple, Intentional, and Inclusive

We always focus on the quality rather than quantity. Instead of planning long events that take up the whole day, we pick a few that resonate with the team like a team lunch, ethnic dress codes or a quick game etc. I kept it very simple this time. Ethnic attire for everyone and a meaningful Pooja followed by Aarti for Lord Krishna on the occasion of Janmashtami.

Make it Optional, Not Obligatory

Encouragement of participation is there but it is never expected. Everybody has a different way of celebrating festivals, be it quietly with their family or staying at home but that is completely okay and understood at MIDCAI.

Stay Budget-Conscious

Shared potlucks or DIY decors are a great way to stay on budget and yet celebrate with fun. It allows the team members to get creative. It is not about how much we spend but how people feel.

Learn and Reflect

If there are any new festivals that are introduced by our team members, we always love to get engaged and listen to the story behind those festivals and traditions. This is a very powerful way to create empathy and awareness across teams.

The Outcome? Culture That Feels Real

A joyful, lower pressure participation is valued at MIDCAI where people can feel that they belong here. We love giving space to people and love celebration as well. Learning and evolving is a part of our journey yet this approach helps us create a culture which is festive but not a forced one, warm but not overwhelming.
